MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 20, 2014) – The Drew University men's basketball team outshot, outrebounded and took care of the rock in an 80-60 defeat of Vassar College on Saturday evening in Baldwin Gymnasium, the first Rangers' victory over the Brewers since 1991.

Three Rangers finished with double-digit points and junior guard Kevin Herring II led the charge with 20 and nine rebounds. Junior guard Ozan Yucetepe notched his second straight 19-point game, a career-high, and junior guard Mike Klinger dropped 17. The Rangers (3-1) shot 48-percent from the floor, while holding Vassar (2-2) to 43 percent. Rebounds were heavily in favor of the Blue & Green at 40-30, and the Rangers committed just five turnovers in the triumph.

Junior forward Jason Huelbig set the offensive tone running parallel to the baseline, drawing contact with a spin, and laying it in despite the foul, he wouldn't score again but grabbed seven rebounds. The Rangers had exploded into a 16-2 opening to the game and were distributing points evenly. Huelbig meanwhile was working on his stat sheet, filling it out thoroughly with three rebounds, two assists, and two points.

Herring and Klinger led the Rangers into the half with 11 and nine points, respectively, on 4-of-8 shooting. The two teams went into the half with Drew leading 42-30.

When they emerged from the locker rooms, Vassar began playing a new brand of basketball. This one was free of the careless fouls and low-percentage shots that characterized the previous half. They were working in the paint, as their center backed down aggressively. Drew would retaliate when Klinger stepped up to the three-point line and let one fly. It popped off the back of the rim but the junior captain zipped in and snatched it out of the air. He leapt again, popping it home with one hand and drawing a foul in the process. He had gotten his three points the hard way instead.

Yucetepe and an opposing forward had been jawing ever since the early technical. The two got physical in the post and Yucetepe got to work on him early, positioning his body and begging for the ball. Once he got it he backed in once, pivoted and lofted a pretty floater for two.

On the other end of that sequence, Yucetepe drew yet another foul on that forward, absorbing the charge and forcing him from the game with foul trouble.

Klinger's presence was felt indirectly and he took on the role of player-coach in some instances. Drew swung the ball around the perimeter until Yucetepe grabbed it for himself. Klinger snapped at him to throw it his way, Yucetepe obeyed and Klinger shook into the zone, drove, and dished to Herring, who knocked down the corner three. Klinger pumped his fist in pride. That was his play.

The 16-2 run that started the game would never quite be overcome by Vassar despite their improved performance in the second half. One more late Drew run buried any hopes of a comeback and the Rangers coasted to their third straight victory.

Drew will look to make it four straight wins when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to challenge a 3-1 King's College team that has yet to lose at home. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 25th at 7:00 p.m. The Rangers will then break for Thanksgiving and return to Baldwin Gymnasium on December 9th to square off against FDU-Florham for the Battle of Madison Avenue. The rivals' tilt is slated for an 8:00 p.m. tip at FDU.
