Mariners Pick Up First Win in Dominant Fashion

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy Men's Basketball (1-3) defeated Maine-Augusta (1-6) 103-73 on Friday night in Smith Gym, to grab their first win of the 2014-2015 season.

Freshman Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) opened up the scoring for the Mariners to go ahead 2-0, and continued to lead the way all night, with a team-high 19 points. Maine Maritime stretched that lead to 5-0 on Nick Holt's (Ellsworth, Maine) three-pointer, and never looked back.

The Mariners entered halftime with a 50-35 lead, and stretched their lead to as much as 33 points in the closing moments of the game, sparked by a 12-point run with a little under 13 minutes remaining in the game.

Thayer added eight assists, two rebounds and a steal while Holt ended the evening with 18 points, three steals, three assists, and a rebound. Freshman Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) grabbed 13 points, five rebounds, and an assist off the bench and Kyle Boucher (Wayne, Maine) added 14 boards, nine points, and three blocks.

"I am very happy with how we played, we played for 40 minutes tonight," said Head Coach David Muchnick, who grabs his first career victory with the Mariners.

Brandon Wilbur recorded a game-high 25 points, while adding 11 rebounds, to lead the Moose. Teammate Keith Chesley added 19 points, and 10 rebounds.

The 103-73 victory marks the largest victory since the Mariners took a 109-26 victory over Unity College on December 2, 2008.

"We are entering the thanksgiving break with some momentum, hopefully we can carry that into our conference opener when we return," added Muchnick. 

The Mariners will return to action on December 2nd when they travel to Maine-Farmington, to open up North Atlantic Conference play at 7:30 PM.
