THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – In an electrifying night inside the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium, the Maritime Men's Basketball team collected its first win of the 2014-15 season as the team knocked off the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 84-68.

The Privateers were led by sophomore Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching), who completed the game with 24 points on the night. Senior T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) was second on the team with 18 points, while rookie John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had 17. Freshman Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) also finished the evening with 12 points. Gibson also led the team with 15 rebounds as he picked up his first double-double of the year.

In addition to his point output, Hayes also led the team with four blocks. Senior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) led the squad with seven assists and also had a team-best four steals in the effort.

Overall the Privateers shot 45.8% from the field including a solid 8-21 shooting from beyond the arc. Maritime also connected on 22-of-30 from the charity stripe with Hayes leading the way as he went 11-of-14, as well as sophomore Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) and Gibson going a combined 6-for-6 at the line.

After falling behind by a basket in the early going, Maritime tied the game at five and then took a one-point lead with Gibson sinking both from the free throw line. After a steal from Corley, MacDonald put up a layup to give Maritime an 8-5 lead.

The Privateers took a seven-point lead when Liccese stepped back for a three-point basket with 13:11 left in the opening half. After the lead shrunk down to a one possession game, sophomore Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) made his Maritime debut with a bang as he drilled a three-pointer from the right elbow to put the Privateers up by five once again.

Maritime took its largest lead of the period with a Liccese three-pointer to put the Privateers up by a 38-29 score, but Merchant Marine was able to close the gap late in the period and send the game to halftime with Maritime leading by a 43-38 score.

Gibson took over in the early stages of the second half as he put Maritime up by 10 with a three-pointer off a pass from Corley. Gibson then sank a jumper later in the period to give Maritime a 17-point edge with just about half the period left to play.

A stingy Merchant Marine team refused to go down without a fight but Maritime was able to hold off the Mariners for the 16-point win to finish off the contest.

Maritime (1-2) will head to Rochester for its next two games as the team will take on Alfred State on Friday evening for a 6 p.m. tip at the Harold J. Brodie Tournament on the campus of Rochester Institute of Technology.

Merchant Marine (0-3) will face an uphill battle in its next contest as the team will take on Division I Stony Brook in a matchup against a Seawolves team that pushed the Georgia Bulldogs to the brink on Tuesday evening.
