Claremont, Calif. - Junior forward Gibson Farone-Collins had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, but the undefeated Biola Men's Basketball team started the game on a 20-3 run and went on to take a 70-53 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the season opener for the Sagehens on Tuesday evening.
Biola, which is three weeks into a season which opened on Oct. 31, improves to a perfect 7-0 with the win, while Pomona-Pitzer, which was missing leading scorer Kyle McAndrews (17.8 ppg in 2013-14) with an injury, opens up at 0-1.
The Sagehens struggled to find the basket early, as Biola used two three-pointers from Pierre Zook to open up a 10-0 lead. Freshman forward Hunter Lowry came off the bench to knock down a three-pointer and cut the lead to 10-3, but Biola scored the next 10 points to open up a 20-3 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer finally got settled in and used three-pointers from Adrian Brandon and Lowry, sandwiched around baskets from Michael Cohen and Glenn Leininger, to close within 20-13. Biola was able to get the lead back up to 14, but Cohen ended the half with a steal and breakaway to make the score 36-25 at intermission.
The Sagehens were never able to mount a rally in the second half, though, as Mike Kurtz had 12 of his 20 points after intermission, to finish with game highs of 20 points and 15 rebounds.
Farone-Collins finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for his double-double for the Sagehens, while Cohen finished with a team-high 15 points and Lowry added 11 in his college debut. Dakari Archer had 12 points and Christian Misi 11 for Biola to give the Eagles three players in double figures.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Trinity (Texas) for a 7 p.m. contest.
