Bulldogs Too Much For Yellowjackets

More news about: UW-Superior

Two days after winning at The College of St. Scholastica, UW-Superior headed over the bridge again, this time to face the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in a Tuesday night showdown. After a victory on Sunday, the Yellowjackets were looking for another one to start out 2-0 on the season. However, the Bulldogs proved to be too tough and just a little too much for the Yellowjackets as they lost the game 80-70.

UMD got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 9-1 lead, with six points coming via layups and three points from the line. It took Superior a while, but they finally got their offense rolling. Down 20-10 halfway through the first half, Superior went on a 9-4 run to cut UMD's lead to 24-19, courtesy of four free-throws from Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) and five points from Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner). The Bulldogs would push the lead back up to 13 points, 34-21 on a three-pointer from Brett Ervin with just under five minutes to play in the first half. Then, the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 16 points with just over three minutes left, but Superior wouldn't quit. Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) nailed a three-pointer, then scored a layup in transition to cut the lead to 11 points. And after UMD pushed the lead, again, back to 15 points, Superior's Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) and Burch hit three-pointers. Superior's John Denny (Luck, Wis./Luck) almost hit a three-pointer from half court as the buzzer sounded to end the half, but it hit the left part of the rim and bounced off.

Superior trailed at the half, 43-32.

The second half turned out to be more of the same pattern the first half was. UMD would build a lead, then Superior would chip away. Unfortunately, Superior could never crack UMD's strength inside, as the Bulldogs scored 52 points in the paint and 21 from the line for the game, totaling 73 of the 80 points UMD scored. UMD hit one three-pointer on the night (1-of-6) which means they only made two other shots from outside of the paint. The Yellowjackets forced 14 UMD turnovers, while only turning the ball over seven times as a team.

Lindblom led the Yelowjackets with 17 points on 8-13 shooting. Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) hit four three-pointers en route to 14 points. Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) and Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) were the other two starters who scored in double-figures, with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The lone starter not to score in double-figures, Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley), finished with eight points and seven assists to only one turnover.

UMD was led by Brett Ervin with 22 points and Pierre Newton with 20.

With the loss, Superior falls to 1-1 on the season. The next game for the Yellowjackets will see them travel to Iowa, as they have a two-game two-day road trip where they will play Crown College in the first game and either St. Scholastica or Wartburg College in their second game at the Wartburg College Thanksgiving Invitiational Game time against Crown College is set for 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 21.
