HENNIKER, N.H. – With double-doubles from senior Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) and junior transfer Karl Agenor (Dorchester, Mass.) men's basketball won their 2014-15 season opener as they defeated Colby-Sawyer College 75-62 Tuesday evening at Coffin Field House.

The win marks the first season opening victory for the Beacons since the 2012-13 campaign, when they defeated Franciscan University (Ohio) 87-71.  The win also marks the second straight for the Beacons over Colby-Sawyer as well.

In his senior season debut, Joseph recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds, and also had a pair of blocks.  For Agenor, his first showing as a Beacon was impressive as he dropped in 14 points, while also picking-up a game-high 17 boards.

As a team, UMass was extremely efficient all night as they shot 41.2% from the field (28-68), 40.0% from 3-point range (6-15), and 86.7% from the free throw line (13-15).  On the glass, UMass held a 56-37 advantage and were also dominant on the d-boards as they out rebounded their non-conference opponent 39-24.

Of Joseph's 21 points, 13 came in the second half as the Brockton native was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and 5-for-6 at the line.  Agenor grabbed a second half best eight rebounds, and also had two blocks.

In their opener, the Beacons came out firing as Luc Ulysse (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drained the first 3-pointer of the year for UMass to get the evening off to a great start.

In the first seven minutes of the contest, the Beacons pushed their lead to 11 (13-2).  They used that early push to carry them throughout the opening half and went into the halftime break with a 36-27 lead.

The second half was a wild one, but the Beacons maintained their strong lead and never once trailed.  They would continue to extend their lead to as much as 12 points, as Layo Medina (Brockton, Mass.) drained a three with just over seven to play.  Four minutes later, Joseph made it a 13-point affair after draining a pair of free throws.

Joseph and Ulysse capped off the evening with the Beacons final four points.

The Beacons return to action on Thursday when they make their home debut at 7 p.m. against Suffolk University.  It will also be the first annual Autism Awareness Night.
