GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy defeated the Wolverines of Wesley College, 85-70, in a physical match-up in front of a home crowd at the Griffin Complex on Tuesday night.
Gwynedd would have a small lead majority of the first half and would stretch that as high as nine points as the Wolverines entered foul trouble. Wesley managed to battle back within three points off a 7-2 run as the Griffins would lead 37-34 at the break. Senior Seth Heinicke and sophomore Arron Goodman led the way for the Griffins combining for 23 points and nine rebounds.
Coming out strong in the second half, the Griffins kicked their offense into full gear as Cedric Elleby would score seven of this game-high 20 points, and help stretch the lead as high as 13 points with 12 minutes remaining. Junior Darnell Artis would hit a key three-pointer with 6:32 to go, to cap a 7-0 spurt and give GM a 70-53 edge, which they would keep the double-digit lead until the end.
With team chemistry at an all-time high, the Griffins defense would not allow the Wolverines to battle back as they held a clear advantage on the glass pulling in 44 boards compared to Wesley's 26. 17 of the 44 caroms were on the offensive side, leading to 17 second-chance points.
Goodman would lead the way for the Griffins with a double-double pulling in 10 rebounds and finishing with 19 points. Julian Hyden, and Heinicke each pulled in seven boards while also scoring in the double digits. Artis finished with eight points and six assists. Heinicke was also a perfect 7-for-7 at the free-throw line.
The Griffins, now 2-0, finished at a shooting clip of 47.4% (27-57) from the floor, including a 56% effort in the second, and 29.4% (5-17) from behind the arc.
Jordan Johnson led the Wolverines (0-2) with 16 points and five rebounds. Wayne Lennon would add 14 and A.J. Tilghman chipped in 12 and three steals.
Next the Griffins head to Stevenson University for the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic. The Griffins take on Catholic University, Friday at 4 p.m., followed by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at 6 p.m.
