UMHB men cruise past Trinity in season opener

San Antonio, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team grabbed an early lead with a hot-shooting first half and the Cru rolled to a 78-51 victory over Trinity University Monday night in San Antonio. UMHB is now 1-0 to start the season. The Tigers fall to 0-2 on the year with the loss.

 

UMHB scored the game's first four points, but Trinity answered and kept it close in the early going. The Cru put together a 13-0 run to break open a 10-9 game midway through the first half and UMHB led 37-20 at halftime. The Cru pushed it to 20 points early in the second half and led by as many as 32 points before cruising to the win. Trinity never led in the contest.

 

Jerard Graham led UMHB with 16 points and he added six rebounds and four assists. Daniel Mills chipped in with 12 points and Sidney Deloach added 11 for the Cru. Layton Zinsmeister grabbed a game-high ten rebounds and also recorded four assists. Eleven different players scored in the game as UMHB shot 47 percent from the field as a team and hit 42 percent from three-point range. The Cru also out rebounded Trinity 53-40 in the victory and shot 52 percent as a team in the first half to take control of the game.

 

A.J. Pulliam led the Tigers with eight points and Nik Oakes had six. The Tigers shot just 27 percent from the field and were held to 23 percent in the first half. Trinity also finished just 6-30 from beyond the arc in the loss.  

 

The Cru will return to action with a trip to the prestigious Hoopsville Invitational this weekend. The tournament, hosted by Stevenson University features some of the top men's basketball programs in the country. UMHB will open the tournament against Randolph-Macon on Friday night.
