Phelps scores career-high 17, Covenant throttles Goucher 83-69

TOWSON, Md. -- Ben Phelps scored a career-high 17 points to lead three Covenant men's basketball players in double figures as the Scots routed Goucher 83-69 on Monday night at the Decker Sports and Rec Center. The meeting was the first between the two schools.

Covenant (1-1) received contributions from up and down the roster as 12 different players found the scoring column. Phelps scored his 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, including three 3-pointers. TJ Cox scored 14 points and had three steals, while Chris Boyd added 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks in the victory.

The Scots jumped out quickly on the host Gophers in the first half. A layup by Teron Ferguson with 15:18 left in the half gave the Scots an 11-3 lead, one they would not relinquish. Covenant extended its lead to 31-11 after a 14-0 run was capped with a Phelps 3-pointer with 5:33 remaining in the half.

The Scots would go into the break with a commanding 49-20 lead after shooting 55.9 percent (19-of-34) in the opening period.

The second half was more of the same as Covenant continued to have its way with the Gophers. The Scots grabbed a 57-24 lead after another Ferguson layup with 16:43 left in the game and would cruise the rest of the way to pick up their first win of the year.

Covenant shot 45.8 percent (33-of-72) for the game and 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from 3-point land. The Scots dished out 16 assists, led by three apiece from Colton McGriff and Daniel Garrett. Each team collected 41 rebounds.

Goucher (0-2) got a game-high 22 points from Tre Galloway III. Kevin Miles added 16 points while Chris Outing chipped in 11 points and 10 rebounds. Goucher turned the ball over 22 points, which led to 27 Covenant points, and shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field.

Covenant will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to face off against regional foe Birmingham Southern. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. CST).
