GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Lehman College men's basketball team earned a split in the season-opening Rowan University Invitational, falling to the hosts, 74-57, in the Championship game. Lehman had defeated Neumann (Penn.) University in the first round.
Senior Jonathan Greenfield (Hartford, Conn./Windsor) and junior Chaun Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eleanor Roosevelt) were both named to the All-Tournament team.
Today, the Lightning started out slowly, as the Profs jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Greenfield sunk a pair of free throw at the 16:13 mark to put Lehman on the scoreboard. Minutes later, Greenfield drained a three-pointer and junior Jerrome Jones (Bronx, N.Y./Mt. Vernon) made a layup, and suddenly Lehman was down by only five, at 12-7.
Later, the lead would get as close as three when junior forward Olusegun Williams (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) hit a mid-range jumper to bring the score to 17-14, with 12:19 left in the first half. But the Lightning would trail for the rest of the period, with the score 43-32 at the half.
In the second stanza, the Lightning would keep the game close, as freshman guard John Brens (Washington Heights, N.Y./Riverside Christian) made a layup for his first points of the game at the 11:37 mark, bringing the score to 53-45. On the next Rowan possession, Miller came up with a steal and hit the fastbreak layup, and suddenly the lead was down to six points.
But the ensuing 8-0 run for the hosts brought the lead back to double digits, where it would remain for the rest of the game.
Freshman guard Andrew Utate (Washington Heights, N.Y./Mt. St. Michael's) led Lehman in scoring with 14 points, while Greenfield added 11 and Jones 10. Miller finished with six points and as many rebounds.
The Lightning will return home to host William Paterson University on Wednesday night, November 19, at 7:00 p.m. It will be the home opener for Lehman.
