Men's Basketball Races to 73-55 Victory over Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team won its season opener on Saturday afternoon with a 73-55 non-conference victory over the University of Mary Washington.

It was the second-straight victory for the Hornets in the series with Mary Washington. The Eagles were 27-6 last season and advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight.

Lynchburg jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first 10 points of the game and leading 21-3 just over eight minutes into the first half.

Lyndon White and Austen Arnold contributed six points each during the spurt.

Mary Washington fought back from that point on, getting the game within 12 at 23-11 as Curtis Rowser III buried a three-pointer. Lynchburg extended the lead back out to 19 three minutes later when Zack Burnett knocked down back-to-back threes to put LC ahead 34-15.

The Eagles clawed back yet again to start the second half, pulling within six points as Lynchburg led 44-38 with 18:29 left to play.

Lynchburg responded with another impressive run, this time 15-3 to pull away from Mary Washington, 61-53, with 12 minutes until the final whistle.

Burnett led the Hornets with 19 points and four trifectas. White added a career-high 16 points to go with team-highs of seven rebounds and four assists. Alex Graves and Arnold contributed 14 and 11 points respectively.

Mary Washington (0-1) was led by Taylor Johnson's double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brent Mahoney added 10 points for the Eagles.

Lynchburg (1-0) hosts Averett University for a 7 p.m. non-conference start on Tuesday evening.
