GREENCASTLE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology built a 19-point halftime advantage and withstood a second half rally to earn a 64-61 victory at DePauw University on Wednesday night.

DePauw forward Pat Haggin missed a potential game tying three-pointer in the final seconds as the Tigers nearly rallied from a double-figure deficit. 

Sophomore Jimmy Miller (Indianapolis/North Central) led the Rose-Hulman offense with a career-high 17 points on 7-9 from the field.  Senior Julian Strickland (Indianapolis/Pike) added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Other key Rose-Hulman contributors included senior Jordy Martin (New Albany) with nine points, four assists and three rebounds; senior Alec Houpt (Chesterton) with eight points; junior Michael Hallstein (Minier, Ill./Olympia) with seven points; and sophomore Matt Loesing (Elsberry, Mo.) with six points.

Michael Wilkison led the DePauw offense with 15 points, and Haggin also reached double figures for the Tigers with 12 points.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 40-21 halftime lead with hot shooting and maintained a double-figure lead until a Haggin three-pointer brought DePauw within 44-35 with 13:19 left.  The lead reached double figures again at 50-39 on a Hallstein basket with 9:26 remaining.

DePauw trimmed the margin to five points at 52-47 on two free throws by Frank Patton at the 6:17 mark.  The Tigers closed to within three points at 57-54 on a Haggin layup with 1:51 left.

Rose-Hulman pushed its lead back to five points at 61-56 in the final minute following a Miller layup and a free throw by Hallstein.  Adam Botts buried a three-pointer for DePauw to bring the deficit within 61-59 with 20 seconds left.

Martin buried two key free throws to push Rose-Hulman's lead to 63-59 with 16 seconds left.  Bradley Fey answered with a layup at the 10-second mark to bring the Tigers within 63-61.

Strickland hit one of two free throws on the ensuing possession to give Rose-Hulman a 64-61 lead, before the Engineers successfully defended the final DePauw shot to preserve the win.

In the first half, Rose-Hulman started fast by building an 18-6 advantage with 11:45 left in the first half after scores from Loesing and Hallstein.  DePauw closed to within eight points at 20-12, but the Rose-Hulman defense held DePauw to two points over four minutes to stretch the lead to 29-14 on four straight points from Houpt.

Rose-Hulman improved to 5-3 on the season, while DePauw dropped to 5-3.  The Fightin' Engineers host in-state rival Manchester on Saturday at Hulbert Arena.
