No. 16 Comets Roll Into 2nd Round, Down Chapman, 85-70

RICHARDSON, TX (03.07.14) - Fueled by the largest crowd in school history, the No. 16-ranked UT Dallas men's basketball team opened the NCAA Division III National Tournament Friday night with a 85-70 win over Chapman in front of a record UTD Activity Center crowd.

A boisterous crowd of 1,437 fans cheered the Comets (now 26-3) on to the second round of the national 62-team tournament. UTD will face Whitworth University (23-5), a 75-73 winner over Trinity University in the other first round game, at 7 pm Saturday for the right to advance to the "Sweet 16" in the national tourney.

With the win, the Comets tied a school record for wins in a season at 26. Chapman's season ended at 18-10.

Senior forward Kyle Schleigh led the Comets with 24 points and a game-high seven assists as UTD shot 48.5 percent from the field despite struggles from three-point range. In addition to Schleigh, all five UTD starters finished in double figure scoring. Matthew Medell finished with16 points while Nolan Harvey had 15 points, Chris McOmber had 11 points and Dmitriy Chernikov added 10 points.

Chernikov grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as the Comets out-rebounded the Panthers, 35-29. Harvey equaled Schleigh's assist total with seven dimes to lead UTD to a 25-13 advantage in assists.

The Comets fell behind early in the opening-round game, but never gave up the lead once Schleigh broke a 13-13 tie when he nailed his first of three three-pointers at the 12:45 mark. From there, UTD scored 12 of the next 16 points to open up an 11-point advantage (28-17) on a Schleigh layup at 7:40.

Chapman was able to cut the lead down to 29-23 three minutes later, but UTD finished off the half on a 16-9 run to take a 45-32 advantage at the half.

The Comets then cashed in on their first three possessions of the second half and had an 18-point lead (52-34) at 17:53 after a Medell three-pointer. By the 12:03 mark, a Medell layup had the UTD lead up to 20 points (64-44). Six minutes later, the Comets had their largest lead at 21 points (74-53) after a Carter Nash tip-in at 6:06.

The Panthers mounted a late charge, going on a 13-2 run to cut the lead down to 78-66 with still 1:43 to play. But UTD stretched the lead back to 16 points to hold off the challenge and finished with the 15-point win.
