Hot-Shooting Tigers Knock Out Runnin Royals

More news about: Eastern Mennonite

SALEM, VA --- Despite shooting 47% from the floor, and forcing four more turnovers than they committed, the EMU basketball men were knocked out of the ODAC Tournament Saturday evening in Salem.  Eight-seeded Hampden-Sydney continued their hot play, blitzing the nets at a 67% clip en route to their second straight upset, 104-80.

The fifth-seeded Runnin Royals had their six-game winning streak broken as they end the year at 17-11.  It was EMU's first trip to the semifinals since 2011.  H-SC had upset their top-seeded archrival, Randolph-Macon, in the quarterfinals, 68-55.

The men were hitting outside shots early as they traded leads with the Tigers.  RJ Sims (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) drained his second triple just 4:46 into the game, putting Eastern Mennonite ahead 12-10.  That turned into EMU's final lead.

Kwa McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) hit a three to trim H-SC's lead to 22-19 at the 10:27 mark, but David Falk (Madison, Va./Madison County) picked up his second foul just seconds later.  Hampden-Sydney's confidence visibly grew without EMU's All-ODAC First Team center manning the middle.  The Tigers scored on four straight possessions to inflate a 32-21 advantage.  Another 7-0 run pushed the lead to 41-25.

H-SC led 47-33 at halftime and then hit back-to-back buckets to start the second, maintaining their momentum.  The Royals shot 50% from the floor over the final 20 minutes, but would get no closer than 16 points as the Tigers shot 75% in the frame.

Hampden-Sydney hit a blazing 42-of-63 shots in the game for 67%, compared to 27-of-58 for 47% for EMU.  The men shot a respectable 38% from three point range, but the Tigers were 9-17.

Marcel Crump (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) was a bright spot, as the junior scored 22 points on 7-11 shooting to go with four assists.  Ryan Yates (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) hit five three-pointers and finished with 16 points and another four assists.  James Williams (Capitol Heights, Md./Archbishop Carroll) had five assists.

Sims charted 17 points, including three triples, in his final game.  The senior finishes with 1,186 points in his career, which lands him at No. 19 on EMU's career scoring list.

Khobi Williamson led the Tigers with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
