SALEM, Va. – Junior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) , a Third Team All-ODAC selection, recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebound, but top-seeded Randolph-Macon fell to No. 8 Hampden-Sydney 68-55 Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament at the Salem Civic Center.
Junior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets (20-6), who had defeated H-SC twice during the regular season. Senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville), a First Team All-ODAC performer, had eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for R-MC.
The Tigers (15-12) sprang to a 12-0 lead in the first 5:15 of the contest. Holmes hit a pair of three-pointers to slice the lead in half at 12-6. H-SC pushed the lead to 20 at 28-8 with 6:22 left in the period. The Yellow Jackets used a 13-3 run to narrow the gap to 10 at 31-21. Hassell paced R-MC in the first half with seven points.
R-MC used a 14-8 spurt to cut the margin to four at 39-35 with 13 minutes remaining. The lead grew back to nine before the Yellow Jackets pulled within three at 55-52 with just under five minutes remaining. H-SC used an 8-1 run to push the lead back to 10 at 63-53. The Tigers eventually secured the 68-55 win.
The Yellow Jackets held a 35-34 advantage on the boards. R-MC pulled down 14 offensive rebounds. The Yellow Jackets shot 32% from the floor (16-50). R-MC was 19-28 from the free throw line (67.9%).
Randolph-Macon will now have to wait until Monday to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the previous four seasons.
