Kean Survives NJCU Twice, 79-78, in NJAC Quarterfinal Overtime Heartbreaker

UNION, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.comNew Jersey City University found itself on the wrong end of a heartbreaking playoff classic, as Kean rallied twice—once in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime, then again in the waning moments of the extra session as the Cougars survived the Gothic Knights, 79-78 in one overtime in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on February 22 at Harwood Arena.
 
Kean (14-12), the No. 4 seed in the tournament, wins three games from No. 5 seeded NJCU (14-12) in a single-season for the first time in the 130-game history of the series and advances to face top-seeded Richard Stockton College in the NJAC semifinals on February 26. NJCU will await a possible Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Tournament bid.
 
The loss spoiled a career-high and game-best scoring effort by sophomore shooting guard KHALID MUHAMMAD(Orange, NJ/Orange) who produced a 32-point, 13-for-23 effort in 40 minutes ((2-6 3FG), adding five rebounds, four blocks, two steals and two assists. But he committed six turnovers and was 4-of-10 from the line, including a key miss in a 1-and-1 situation with NJCU ahead 70-68 and 13 seconds remaining, before senior Ali Mix (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) drove the floor off the rebound and forced overtime.
