The Oglethorpe men's basketball team suffered a tough loss Sunday in Jackson, Miss., falling to the home-standing Millsaps Majors 75-67. The Stormy Petrels now finish the regular season with a 19-6 overall record. Their 9-5 SAA record puts them in third place by themselves, and they'll face sixth-seeded Millsaps in a rematch in the SAA quarterfinals Friday night.
The Petrels shot 46 percent to Millsaps' 51 percent for the game, and converted at a 28 percent rate from the three-point line while Millsaps shot 33 percent from beyond the arc.
The Petrels did get some quality individual performances despite the loss. Junior guard Alex Davis scored 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting while passing out four assists. Junior center Jordan Kinney and senior guard Tyler Courson each added 13 points. Kinney shot 5-of-7 and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line while Courson was 6-for-12. Sophomore forward Victor Rohlfs added 11 points on 3-of-6 three-point shooting, eight rebounds and four assists.
The Petrels, who were somewhat short-handed this weekend due to a series of injuries and illnesses, jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Millsaps came back to tie the game at 18-18 with 10:42 remaining in the half. However, the Majors followed with a 15-2 run that turned the game upside down and gave them a 10-point lead, 33-23, with 5:10 left in the first half. Oglethorpe went on a 7-3 run to end the half, however, and trailed by six points at the halftime break.
In the second half, the Majors kept the Stormy Petrels at arm's length for the entrie period. They built their lead to as many as 14 points and kept it at around 10 points for much of the stanza. The Petrels got as close as five points back, 61-56, with 3:04 remaining. They again found themselves within five points a couple times within the game's final minute, but Millsaps hit the free throws they needed to secure the game.
The No. 3 seed Petrels will now get set for a rematch with the No. 6 seed Majors in the SAA quarterfinals Friday night in Danville, Ky., at 8 p.m. As Centre secured the league's regular-season championship, they earn the right to host the SAA Tournament. The winner of the Oglethorpe-Millsaps tilt will take on the winner of 2 vs. 7 game between Birmingham-Southern and Hendrix in the semifinals on Saturday.
