(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College men's basketball team battled Saint Vincent College in a close game Saturday, pulling out an impressive 90-80 win in a Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 13-11 overall, and 12-4 in the PAC, securing the number two position in the conference tournament. With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 19-6 overall, and 12-4 in the PAC.
The Saints battled the Bearcats back and forth in the first half entering the halftime locker room with a narrow lead of 37-34. Freshman guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) led the Saints in first half points with 10. Junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) followed close behind with 8 points. The first half was full of action with nine lead changes. Thomas More closed out the first half shooting 50 percent from behind the three-point line, and 48 percent from the paint.
The Saints and Bearcats continued the back and forth action through the second half with ten lead changes. At the 3:20 mark, the Saints took the lead for the final time as they began to separate themselves from the trailing Bearcats. Senior guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Oh./Kings) led Thomas More with 20 points. The victory proved to be a team effort with four other Saints scoring double-digit points. Drew Mumford finished the game with 19 points, senior forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, McGovney finished with 14 points, and senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) had 13 points.
For the game, the Saints shot 53 percent from the paint (28-of-53), and 46 percent from behind the three-point arc (6-of-13). Spencer Berlekamp led the team in assists with five.
The Saints are set to return to action on Tuesday (February 25) at 7:30 p.m. in Crestview Hills, Kentucky in the PAC conference tournament. The Saints are the No. 2 seed and will be taking on the seventh-seeded Grove City.
