Turnovers doom Yellowjackets in season-ending loss

More news about: UW-Superior

Turnovers have been a consistent problem for the UW-Superior men's basketball team during the 2013-2014 season.  And in their final game of the season, turnovers again proved to ultimately be the downfall for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets committed 23 turnovers, five of which game during a crucial five-minute stretch of the second half, on the way to a 67-58 loss to UW-Oshkosh at the Kolf Sports Center Saturday afternoon.

UW-Superior fell despite limiting the Titans to just 37.5 percent shooting.

But UW-Oshkosh committed just 10 turnovers and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds in dropping the Yellowjackets final record to 7-18 overall and 4-12 in WIAC play.

For their part, the Titans improved to 12-13 overall and 7-9 in league action.

UW-Superior got off to a good start, scoring the first six points behind baskets from Jarrod Peterson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and Aaron Corry (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) along with two free throws from Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) in the opening 1:40 of play.

The Titans came right back, scoring the next eight to take an 8-6 lead on a three-pointer by Dylan Wurtz with 16:35 showing on the clock.

UW-Oshkosh continued to expand the lead behind baskets from Alex Olson and Jade Royston for an 18-10 edge at the 12:07 mark of the half.

The Yellowjackets scored the next five points, on a layup from Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton), a free throw by Bronson Byrne (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) and a jumper by Jarrod Peterson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) to come to within 18-15 with 8:31 remaining in the opening frame.

UW-Superior continued to battle, getting a three-pointer from Aaron Corry (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) to even matters 24-24 at the 4:47 mark before taking a 26-25 lead on a layup by Peterson with 3:53 showing on the clock.

The Titans came right back however, scoring the final seven points of the half for a 32-26 lead at the intermission on a basket by Max Schebel in the last 42 seconds of the first half.

UW-Superior steadily rallied to begin the second half, coming to within 46-45 on a driving layup by Schradle with 10:13 left in regulation.

But five Yellowjackets' turnovers over the next 4:21 allowed the Titans to score the next 10 points for a 56-45 advantage on Wurtz's layup with 7:08 remaining in the contest.

From there, UW-Superior never got closer than eight points the rest of the game.

Peterson finished with a game-high 19 points. Schradle added 13 points while Corry finished with 10 points for UW-Superior.

UW-Oshkosh was paced by Wurtz and Royston with 15 points each. Kyle Bolger added 11 points with Alex Olson finishing with 10.
