(BETHANY, W.Va.) – Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 80-77, to Bethany College tonight (Wednesday, February 19, 2014) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Hummel Field House in Bethany, West Virginia.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 12-11 overall and 11-4 in the PAC. With the win, the Bison improve 20-4 overall and 13-2 in the PAC as they moved into solo first place in the PAC.
Bethany jumped out to an 11-2 lead with 15:16 to play in the first half when Kevin Jackson made a lay-up. Thomas More answered with a 39-21 run capped by a lay-up by senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) with 1:32 to play in the half to give the Saints a 41-32 lead. The Bison closed out the half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 41-38 at halftime when Lawrence Weldon converted a three-point play with 31-seconds to play in the half.
The Bison opened the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 45-43 lead with 16:54 to play in the game when Tyrone Smother converted an old fashion three-point play. Thomas More responded with a 7-0 run to regain a 50-45 lead when junior forward Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) made one-of-two free-throws with 13:20 to play in the second half. Bethany answered with a 30-16 run capped by a Delonte' Joyce three-pointer with 2:01 to play in the game to build a 75-66 lead. Undaunted the Saints used a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 77-75 with 34-seconds to play in the game when Hayes made two free-throws. That would be as close as the Saints would come as Bethany closed out the game on a 3-2 run for the 80-77 victory.
Thomas More had two players in double-figure scoring as junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) had 25 and freshman guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) finished with 20 points. Hayes just missed double-figures with nine points. Mufmord also led the team on the boards with six rebounds, while he and senior guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) led the team in assists with six each.
The Saints will close-out the regular-season on Saturday (February 22) when they host Saint Vincent College on Senior Day at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
