Providence, R.I. – In their final road game of the 2014 season, the Mount Ida men's basketball team suffered a 108-41 defeat at the hands of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Johnson & Wales University at the Wildcat Center on Saturday afternoon.
Mount Ida will now turn their attention to their three-game home-stand that closes off the regular season, beginning on Tuesday evening with a pivotal GNAC matchup against Norwich at Mount Ida College Athletic Center.
Junior Treace Macklin (Brockton, Mass.) paced Mount Ida with 19 points, while freshman Ethan Dujon (Warwick, R.I.) was also in double-figures with 10 points in the loss for the Mustangs (4-18, 2-13 GNAC).
Seniors Esaie Touze (Providence, R.I.), Curtis Lucas (Providence, R.I.), Matt Barboza (Riverside, R.I.),Francisco Reyes (Lawrence, Mass.) and Rameek Boyd (New Rochelle, N.Y.) were honored in a ceremony prior to the game, but it was sophomore Quarry Greenaway (Westchester, N.Y.) who turned in the highlight performance of the game for the Wildcats (18-5, 14-2 GNAC).
Greenaway led all scorers with 28 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Touze notched a double-double with 18 points and 13 points in the victory. Barboza tallied 15 points while Lucas had 14 points and three assists for the Wildcats. Sophomore Robert Lewis (Baltimore, Md.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points for JWU.
Johnson & Wales dominated the action early and took the first double-digit lead after a layup by Greenaway gave the Wildcats the 16-5 lead with 16:16 left in the first half. A three-pointer by Barboza gave JWU their first twenty point advantage at 28-8 with 12:16 remaining in the first half. The Wildcats continued to carry the play throughout the first half and took the 56-26 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. JWU shot an impressive 61.3% (19-for-31) from the field for the half.
The Wildcats opened the second half on a 24-0 run, capped by a layup by Garrick to pull ahead 80-26 with just over 14 minutes remaining. JWU led by more than 60 points midway through the stanza before cruising to the 108-41 victory. The 108 points is a season-high for the Wildcats and all players that dressed for JWU scored at least two points in the contest.
The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February 18th when they host Albertus Magnus in a key GNAC contest at 7:00 p.m.
