Geneseo Drops Buffalo State, 81-67

BUFFALO, NY—Junior Gordon Lyons had 28 points and 16 rebounds and surpassed the 1,000-career point plateau while leading visiting Geneseo (18-4/12-3) to an 81-67 victory over Buffalo State (11-12/7-9) in a SUNYAC game today at the Sports Arena.

Senior Justin Mitchell (Buffalo/Timon) finished with 11 points in eight rebounds to lead Buffalo State in his final regular season home game as a Bengal.  Chris Thompson (Far Rockaway/Channel View) added 10 points and nine boards, and senior Chris Castren (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) chipped in nine points.               

The lead changed five times in the early going, but Buffalo State held its final edge of the game at 25-24 with seven minutes to play in the opening half.  After the Knights closed out the first half with a 42-34 edge, they assembled a 15-0 run early in the second half to push the lead to 20 and take control. 

Geneseo shot 54-percent from the field, compared to just 36-percent by the Bengals.  The Knights held a 50-30 scoring advantage in the paint, and outrebounded the Bengals, 42-35.  The Bengals finished with nine 3-pointers compared to one by the Knights, but Geneseo had a 24-8 scoring advantage at the free throw line.

Buffalo State will close out the regular season with games at Potsdam and Plattsburgh on Friday and Saturday respectively, needing at least one win to keep its playoff hopes alive.
