Montclair, NJ – Sophomore guard Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL, Meadowbrook Academy) scored a season-high 29 points, including a school-record nine three-pointers as Montclair State kept its NJAC Tournament hopes alive with a 100-83 victory over Kean University on Saturday.

Junior forward Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) registered his 25th career double-double scoring 24 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as the Red Hawks (10-13) snapped a two-game losing streak while improving to 7-10 in the NJAC.

Montclair State is currently tied with Rowan for the final spot in the conference tournament with The College of New Jersey and Ramapo a game behind at 6-11. Montclair State heads to The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, February 19 for its regular-season finale while Rowan hosts Richard Stockton with both games at 8:00 pm. Ramapo takes on William Paterson in Mahwah at the same time as the final spot could potentially be decided through tiebreakers.

Michael Burton had 19 points for Kean, which fell to 12-12 overall, 8-9 in the league as the Cougars are tied with New Jersey City for fourth place.

Gonzalez, who not only broke the single-game record but the single-season mark as well, led an early three-point barrage by the Red Hawks. Junior guard James D'Angelo (Long Valley, NJ, West Morris Central) hit the first one and one from Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune), who finished with 22 points and back-to-back triples by Gonzalez staked the Red Hawks to a 12-4 lead which grew to 19-6 with 13:22 left after Goldson put in a layup.

A three-pointer by Burton trimmed the MSU lead to 24-18 with nine minutes left however Goldson got a bucket and Gonzalez hit from behind the arc for a 29-18 advantage. Three straight triples by Gonzalez extended the lead to 38-22 and a layup from D'Angelo capped off an outstanding first half by MSU which took a 46-31 lead into the break.

Montclair State shot nearly identical percentages as it was 17-of-30 (56.7 percent) overall for the half, including 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from the three-point line.

In the second half, Fuller scored in the paint bringing the Cougars within 50-39 however Gonzalez connected three consecutive trips down the floor the last with 14:39 to play making the score 59-39.
