SALISBURY, Md. – David Langan recorded a double-double and three other Wolverines scored in double figures as the 10th-ranked Wesley College men's basketball team defeated Salisbury, 67-62, on Wednesday night. The Wolverines (19-2, 11-2) are just one victory shy of the program-record for wins which they set last year. The Sea Gulls' five-game win streak comes to an end and they fall to 11-11 overall and 6-7 in the Capital Athletic Conference.
Langan scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and made all of his free throws while pulling down 19 rebounds and blocking a career-high five shots for the third-straight game, all of which came in the first half. Nine of Eric Selby's 13 points came in the first half while Wayne Lennon added 12 and Brandin Youngblood chipped in with ten.
A six-foot-eight senior center out of Sayreville, N.J., Langan is quickly approaching several milestones that puts him among Wesley's all-time greats. Langan is now just 20 points from becoming the 12th Wolverine to tally 1,000 career points. He is also just ten rebounds from passing Paul Reynolds to become the school's all-time leading rebounder.
Coming off the bench, Anthony Bowers scored nine points and Quincy Pettiford finished with seven in his traditional starting role.
Wesley took a 30-27 lead into the half as Bowers drained a three with 30 seconds left in the period as both teams battled for position throughout the first 20 minutes. Lennon made a three and Langan sunk a pair of free throws to start the second half and the Wolverines extended their lead to as many as 46-36 with 11:36 left in the game when Bowers made another three, capping a 7-0 Wesley run.
Langan then was charged with a pair of quick fouls; giving him four on the day and Salisbury was quick to capitalize, tying the score at 48 with 7:49 left to play. With the game tied, Wesley called timeout and Langan re-entered the game.
With a dominating force in the middle, the Wolverines quickly regained a six point lead but the Sea Gulls would not go away, clawing back to within a basket with 28 seconds left after an 11-2 run. Selby and Pettiford made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Navy & White.
Wesley outshot Salisbury, 45.1% to 35.9% on the night.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday, February 15 when they travel to Mary Washington for a 1 pm tipoff.
