HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Despite holding No.
2 Cabrini to its lowest point total of the season, the Centenary
College men's basketball team was handed a 69-53 defeat by the
Cavaliers on Wednesday night at the John M. Reeves Student
Recreation Center.
The Cyclones (6-16, 5-10 CSAC) held Cabrini below 70 points for
the first time in the Cavaliers last 36 games, but were hurt by 31
percent shooting (17-54).
Senior guard Kyle
Malavasi (Asbury, N.J./North Hunterdon) scored
the first five points for the Cyclones, who led 5-3 after two
minutes, but a 17-2 Cabrini run spanning exactly eight minutes put
the Cavaliers in control of the game.
After senior forward Joshua
Case (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) drilled a
triple, he followed with another bucket to make the score 29-17
with under one minute remaining in the half. Aaron
Walton-Moss's layup just before the buzzer brought the
Cavaliers' edge to 14 at the break.
Six points from Vinny Walls during the first four
minutes of the second half helped the Cavaliers build a 40-21
advantage. The Cyclones responded with six-straight points,
including a long triple from junior Djovan
Beausejour (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East);
however Cabrini netted 15 of the next 20 points as its lead
ballooned to 23.
Centenary sliced its deficit as small as 13 once more following
Beausejour's three-point play at the 1:43 mark, but it was too late
for the Cyclones.
Beausejour paced all scorers with 18 points and pulled down five
boards, while Case just missed a double-double, tallying nine
points and 10 rebounds. Beausejour connected on 6-of-6 free throw
attempts and added two steals.
Cabrini, which shot 45 percent (24-53) and held a 42-30 edge on
the glass, was led by Brennan McCann's 13 points.
Brent Mahoney added 10 points and eight
rebounds.
Fran Rafferty returned to the starting lineup
for the Cavaliers, scoring just five points in 28 minutes.
Aaron Walton-Moss came off the bench, played 18
minutes and chipped in nine points and six rebounds.
Centenary continues its five-game home stand Saturday against
Keystone. The Cyclones will honor their senior class prior to the
game.
