OSWEGO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Gordon Lyons scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Knights made up a 15-point first-half deficit to earn the 66-62 victory over host Oswego in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.
Senior guard Connor Fedge added 16 points including 8-of-10 free throws for the Knights (10-2, 4-1 SUNYAC)
"I am so proud of this group of young men. For the second night in a row, they came back from a double-digit deficit," said head coach Steve Minton. "Oswego only turned the ball over once in the first half, but we were able to create some opportunities in the second half on a night that easy baskets were hard to come by."
The Lakers (10-5, 4-4 SUNYAC) broke open a tight game early on with and 18-6 run to lead 27-14 lead with 8:34 on the first-half clock. Oswego would open their largest lead of the game, 41-28, with 1:36 to play in the first half and hold a 12-point edge, 41-29, at intermission.
Trailing 51-39 with 10:43 left in regulation, the Knights went on a 15-2 run to take a 54-53 lead at 4:52. The Lakers would re-take the lead on a three-point play by Brian Sortino, but back-to-back baskets by Lyons put the Knights ahead for good, 58-56 with 3:18 to go.
Fedge would make a layup at 1:25, before Sortino would hit a pair of free throws that ended a span of 4:06 that Oswego went without any points. Geneseo junior guard Andy Drescher drained a pair of free throws with 21 seconds remaining, before a Sortino layup pulled the host team back within two, 62-60, with fifteen seconds remaining.
Fedge would hit two more free throws, before Sortino again answered with a layup with seven seconds left to stay within two. Drescher would head back to the free throw line after being fouled on the ensuing Knights possession and hit both attempts for the final points of the game. Lyons stole the ball on the Lakers' final possession to end the game.
Sortino finished the night with a game-high 26 points in the loss.
