WATERVILLE, Maine --- Connor O'Neil (Freeport, Maine) had one of his best all-around games with 21 points, seven rebounds, and six assists to lead the Colby College men's basketball team to an easy 101-66 non-conference win over University of Maine at Presque Isle on Tuesday night.
Colby, which won seven games a year ago, moves to 13-9 overall heading into Friday's 8 p.m. NESCAC game at Tufts University. Maine-Presque Isle fell to 8-14 overall.
O'Neil shot 6-for-9 from the field, 4-for-6 from 3-point range, 5-for-6 from the foul line, had two steals, and just one turnover.
Colby center Chris Hudnut (Chevy Chase, Md.) also had 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting, pulled down eight rebounds, and had two steals. Hudnut leads Colby in scoring (17.6), rebounding (8.2), and is second in assists (57 total).
Patrick Stewart (Bangor, Maine) chipped in with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting and a game-high nine rebounds for the Mules. Ryan Jann (Westford, Mass.) added eight points and five assists, Luke Westman (Newton, Mass.) finished with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting and three assists, and Shane Rogers (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) also had nine points and three assists.
The Owls had five players in double figures, including 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting from Michael Warner (Norwich, UK). Claude Louis (Union, N.J.) had 13 points, four assists, and three steals. Chase Vicaire (Mattawamkeag, Maine) scored 12 points, while Derek Healy (Hanover, Mass.) and Thiago Conceicao (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) both had 10 points.
Colby, which led 48-34 at halftime, shot 52.2 percent from the field, 44 percent from 3-point range, and 86 percent from the foul line. The Mules had 25 assists on their 36 made baskets.
Colby opened up a 17-3 lead after just 4:29 of action. The Mules led by as much as 21 points at 28-8 with 12:27 to go before UMPI chipped away at the lead. The Owls were able to get the lead to 14 points at the break.
UMPI cut Colby's lead to 12 points at 50-38 with 18:34 left in the game, but the Mules went on a 12-0 run to put the game away.
