John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) scored 20 points, pushing him into the top spot in The College at Brockport men's basketball scoring history with 1,608 points as the Golden Eagles defeated Potsdam 88-60 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon in Brockport.
"This means everything to me," said Ivy. "I give all the credit to my teammates over the years and my coaches. I am especially thankful that Coach Dunne recruited me to come here and be a part of the Brockport family."
Brockport (17-2, 11-1 SUNYAC) took the lead early and held onto it for the entire game. Olusola Adeniran (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) got things going for the Golden Eagles, hitting two free throws and starting Brockport on a 10-2 run.
Potsdam (3-17, 1-12 SUNYAC) slowly chipped away at Brockport's lead, coming within one point at 11:45. However, a layup from Dorian Hayden (East Northport, NY/Northport) and a three pointer from Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) pushed the Golden Eagle lead back out to seven.
With 8:42 left to play in the first half, the Bears were able to once again cut Brockport's lead to just one point, but the Golden Eagles answered back with another run, going up by 10 points with 6:45 remaining.
Brockport closed out the first half on a 16-7 run to take a 46-27 lead into halftime.
Ivy broke the scoring record on the first play of the second half, draining a three pointer and putting the Golden Eagles up by 22 points. Ivy surpassed Eddie Green and Dan Panaggio who each had recorded 1,601 total points.
"From the minute John walked on campus, we knew he was special," said head coach Greg Dunne. "Not just a special player but a great kid and a great teammate. Everyone that knows John, loves John. With all the great players that have played here at Brockport, it makes this record even more special. He set the all-time record at a place that has a great basketball tradition."
Potsdam could not contain the Golden Eagles in the second half. The closest the Bears would get was 15 points with 12:18 left to play.
Jon Carnegie (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) closed out the game with a big dunk in the final second to give the Golden Eagles their largest lead, 28.
Ivy led the way on offense with 20 points and three steals, finishing 8-for-11 from the floor. Adeniran added 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) chipped in 12 and Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) had 10. Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) recorded a team-high five assists.
The Golden Eagles finished the night shooting 46% (29-63) from the floor, 41.7% (10-24) from long range and 76.9% (20-26) from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles also forced Potsdam into 23 turnovers.
