Men’s Hoops Dismantles Westminster In Conference Win

Feb. 5 – NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Bethany College men's basketball team (17-4, 10-2 PAC) used 10 three-point makes and aggressive defense, to defeat Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Westminster, 74-58.

The Bison came out the gate swinging, scoring the first nine points to take an early 9-0 advantage with 18:20 remaining in the first period.

The run was all about the backcourt duo of Delonte' Joyce (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Lawrence Weldon (Baltimore, Md./Poly). Joyce knocked down two triples, while Weldon accounted for another, as the Bison looked to take control early.

The Titans would counter, however, with a 12-4 run to cut the Bison lead to just one-point (13-12) with 12:01 left in the first half. The run was capped off after a three-point shot by Cameron Pozsgai.

Bethany would then outscore Westminster 27-15 over the next 10 minutes, en route to a 13-point advantage (40-27) heading into halftime.

The Bison shot the ball well in the first half of play, hitting 8-of-17 (.471) from downtown, which included three a piece from both Joyce and Pedro Lalor (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips). They also displayed a fine touch from the charity stripe, converting on 10-of-11 attempts (.909).

The second half saw the Bison in complete control, holding as much as a 17-point lead (53-36) before ultimately defeating the Titans, 74-58.

Defensively the Bison showed everyone why they are ranked among the nations best, forcing the Titans into 19 turnovers, including 16 steals.

Offensively, the Bison were led by backcourt teammates Joyce and Weldon. Joyce had an impressive outing, scoring a game-high 21 points, while also notching seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Weldon did his part, scoring 13 points and adding four assists.

Lalor, Leslie Addy (Columbia, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti), and Ramel Young (Walterboro, S. C./Estill) also contributed to the victory. Lalor came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points, while Addy chipped in eight points and eight boards. Young registered eight points and seven rebounds.

The Bison return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 8., when they play host to PAC nemesis Thiel College. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
