Stueck's 35 offsets six in double figures as MSOE tips Lakeland 96-89

The Lakeland College men's basketball team shot 56.1% from the field and finished with six players scoring in double figures, but it still wasn't enough in a 96-89 loss to Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday night.

The Muskies' glossy offensive numbers were matched and even bettered by the Raiders, in particular by MSOE sophomore forward Austin Stueck, who scored a career-high 35 points. Lakeland dropped to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The Muskies made 32 of 57 field goals in the game, including 10 of 19 from three-point range (52.6%). Lakeland had some troubles at the free throw line, though, making 15 of 24 (62.5%) and also committed an uncharacteristic 16 turnovers.

MSOE (6-2 overall, 3-2 NACC) shot 50.0% (33 of 66) from the field and made 12 of 25 three-point attempts (48.0%). The difference in the game came at the free throw line, where the Raiders went 18 of 23 (78.3%), and also in the turnover category, as the hosts committed just eight turnovers.

Stueck scored 23 points in the second half as the Raiders took control in a game that included seven ties and 13 lead changes. Momentum swung to MSOE for good after a 14-0 run gave the Raiders a 67-61 lead with 12:19 left. That spurt came immediately after an 11-0 charge by the Muskies that briefly resulted in a 61-53 lead.

Lakeland never led again the rest of the way, getting only as close as one point, the last time after a three-point play by Justin Ward (Sr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) made it 80-79 with 5:06 to play. MSOE scored the next five points, and the Muskies made it a one-possession game just one more time, after Travis Kell (Fr.-Madison, Wis.) scored inside to make it 87-84. Stueck was fouled shooting a three-pointer the next time down, though, and made all three free throws.

James Oshkeshequoam (Sr.-Keshena, Wis.) pumped in 19 points to lead the Muskies. Joey Burris (Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) scored 18, Ward and Zach Van Engen (So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) scored 13, Stan McKenzie (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) chipped in 12 and Kell added 11. Ward also grabbed 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double this year.

Stueck finished making 11 of 17 shots, including 6-of-9 from three-point range and all seven of his free throw attempts. Jaren Singh added 16 for the Raiders, who led 48-45 at halftime after a first half in which neither team led by more than six.

Lakeland now gets a nearly two-week break before playing again on New Year's Eve, when it takes a trip to face Finlandia (Mich.) University in Hancock, Mich. Game time is 2 p.m. Central time in the Upper Peninsula.
