Tommie men pull away in second half, stay in lead

Senior Zach Riedeman had 19 points and the first-place Tommies (17-3 overall, 14-1 MIAC) pushed their win streak to five with Wednesday night's 65-56 win over the Bethel Royals (12-9, 8-8) in MIAC men's basketball play at Schoenecker Arena.

The No. 14-ranked Tommies outscored Bethel 27-12 from from 3-point range and 16-4 at the foul line.

UST used an 8-0 run in the first 2:30 of the second half to take the lead for good at 36-30.

Marcus Alipate converted a four-point play with a trey and free throw with just over 3:00 left to extend the UST lead to 56-46.

Luke Buttenhoff had 14 points and eight rebounds and Jackson Canfield scored 10 for Bethel.

Erik Tengwall had 12 of his 15 points in the second half and closed with six assists. Alipate scored 10.

The Tommies and second-place St. Olaf each won on Wednesday as the lead stays at one game for UST atop the conference standings.
