Hilbert Makes It Five In a Row With Win Over Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team hung on for an 80-73 road win at Cazenovia College tonight to extend their winning streak to five games. 

Going six players deep, the Hawks held a 19-point half time lead and had enough points stored in their tank to take the win as Cazenovia outscored Hilbert 42-30 in the final stanza.  Hilbert improved to 17-3 overall after the non-conference win over the 5-13 Wildcats.

Jerame Owens went the full 40-minutes and finished with 25 points and 18 rebounds to lead four Hawks in double figures.   This marked the 11th game Owens posted a double-double and his 9th game with multiple blocks.

Trevor Stark led both teams with five assists, a team-high two steals to go along with his 14 points for Hilbert.  CJ Hodge was perfect from beyond the arc to add 13 points whileJalen Smith came off the bench playing 34 minutes and shot six for six from the charity stripe and chipped in 12 points.

Cazenovia's Keith Caiello shot seven for ten from the floor, five for five from the foul line to lead the Wildcats with 22 points.
In a close statistical game the largest numerical difference was in blocked shots, the activity at the foul line and rebounding.  Cazenovia had a slight edge from the field (42.9% vs 40.0%) while Hilbert made only two more 3-point shots.  Each team finished with six steals, almost identical turnovers (17 vs 16). 

Hilbert got after the offensive glass pulling in 16 offensive boards (vs 9), and added five blocks (vs. 1).

There were a total of 55 fouls called between the two teams, with three Wildcats earning a spot on the bench before the final horn.  Hilbert's starting five combined for 19 total fouls with four getting whistled for four fouls each.    Hilbert made 29 foul shots (46 attempts) while Caz was successful 20 times of their 26 tries.

Xavier Major was super aggressive on the offensive end of the floor as he tracked down seven offensive rebounds to finish the night with 11 total rebounds, two assists, eight points and two blocks.

Hilbert closes out their season with two road conference games before they return to Hamburg to celebrate senior day for CJ Hodge in his last home game of the season February 15th.  The Hawks then travel to the league leaders, Penn State Behrend (2/19) and La Roche (2/22).
