ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds as Randolph-Macon routed Guilford 103-58 Saturday afternoon in Crenshaw Gymnasium in a battle for first place in the ODAC.
The Yellow Jackets (15-4, 9-1 ODAC) have won 11 straight and 14 of their past 15 contests.
R-MC had four players score in double figures. Junior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) tallied 16 off the bench, going 5 for 5 on three-pointers for the second time this season. Freshman Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) added 14 and junior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) chipped in 13.
The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the contest. After the score was tied at 6-6, R-MC used a 23-7 spurt to take a 29-13 lead with eight minutes remaining in the half. The advantage swelled to 24 at 45-21 before the Yellow Jackets took a 45-24 lead to the locker room at the break.
The Quakers (14-5, 8-2) twice cut the deficit to 19 before a 20-6 run gave R-MC a 33-point advantage at 77-44 with 8:30 left in the contest. The largest lead was the final margin of 45.
R-MC reached 100 points for the third time this season. The Yellow Jackets shot 55.2% from the floor (37-67) and 65.0% from beyond the arc (13-20). They held Guilford to 29.4% shooting (20-68). R-MC won the battle of the boards 44-37 and the Yellow Jackets committed just six turnovers.
Senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville), the leading scorer for R-MC, was held to six points and is four away from becoming the 40th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.
Matt McCarthy led the Quakers with 15 points, while Zeb Richardson added 12.
R-MC returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5 for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Bridgewater.
