Four Saints Reach Double-Figures in 69-61 Win at Waynesburg

(WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – Four Saints reached double-figure scoring today (Saturday, February 1, 2014) as the Thomas More College defeated Waynesburg University, 69-61, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints improve to 9-9 overall and 8-2 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 9-11 overall and 4-7 in the PAC.

Thomas More raced out to a 10-0 lead with 16:38 to play in the first half when junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) made a lay-up.  Waynesburg answered with a 5-0 run capped by a BJ Durham lay-up with 15:23 to play in the half to cut the lead to 10-5.  The Saints used a 13-6 run to extend the lead to 23-11 when senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) made one-of-two free-throws with 5:31 to play in the opening half.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 14-6 run to cut the lead to 29-25 with 19-seconds to play in the half when Jacob Fleegle made two free-throws.  Freshman guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) scored the final three points of the half to increase the Saints' lead to 32-25 at halftime.

Waynesburg opened the second half on an 8-4 run to cut the lead to 36-33 with 16:59 to play in the game when Byrum Louco made a lay-up.  Thomas More answered with a 5-0 run to increase the lead to 41-33 when junior guard Eliot Pipes (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) made a three-pointer with 13:52 to play in the game.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 22-13 run capped by a Fleegle lay-up with 6:12 to play in the game to take a 55-54 lead.  Undaunted, the Saints closed out the game on a 15-6 run to win the game 69-61.

Reaching double-figure scoring was Mumford with 16 points, senior forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) with 14, Hayes with 13 and McGovney with 11.  McGovney led the team on the boards with eight rebounds, while senior guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) led the team in assists with three.

The Saints return to action on Wednesday (February 5) when they travel to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to play Geneva College.  The PAC game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. inside the Metheny Fieldhouse.
