Eagles Escape with a Win; Hold off Late Mariners Rally

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime overcame a 13-point first half deficit and came within three points with 1:26 left in the game, but Green Mountain withstood the rally and escaped with 49-41 win in a North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game Friday. The Eagles improved to 4-11, 3-8 NAC, while the Mariners dropped to 1-16, 0-10.

Zach Radcliffe scored a team-high 10 points for Maine Maritime and Tyler Chiasson and Jason Hatch added eight each. Tyler Gilson grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Mariners.

Robert Holloway paced the Eagles with 11 points and Dakota Dodson and Terry Jones added eight each. Jones also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.

Maine Maritime opened the second half with a 10-2 scoring run to close the gap to five, 28-23, with 12:13 left in the game. Radcliffe highlighted the run with seven points. The Eagles built their lead to eight on a pair of Holloway free throws with 5:16 left before the Mariners went on an 11-6 run to close to make it 41-38 on a jumper by Tyler Chiasson with 1:26 remaining. Green Mountain converted 6 of 8 from the line in the final 30 seconds to ice the game.

After a three by Radcliffe put the Mariners within three, 8-5, early in the game, Green Mountain went on an 11-0 run and led 19-5 after a Cassius Belfon three with 9:33 left in the opener. Jesse Thompson's jumper gave the Eagles their largest lead, 26-10 with 5:45 left before the Mariners netted the final three points of the first half to make it 26-13 at halftime.

Maine Maritime returns to action Saturday hosting Castleton at 3 p.m.
