MIDDLETOWN, PA – York College senior Mike Mathews (Newark, Del./Salesianum) hit a put back with just over six seconds left in overtime to lift the Spartans to a 61-60 Capital Athletic Conference win at PSU Harrisburg on Wednesday. The go-ahead shot is Mathews' second game-winner for the Spartans this season.

The victory is the Spartans' first road win of the year as they improve to 3-15 overall and 2-8 in the CAC. Harrisburg falls to 6-12 overall and 3-7 in the league. The teams split their regular season series with the road team winning both games.

Mathews' overtime winner was made possible by a Mathews' lay up with 15 seconds left in regulation to force overtime after 40 minutes of play.

The first half was slow sledding for both squads as neither team got any significant offensive momentum. The Green and White took a 12-8 lead midway through the half only to see the Lions' William Doyle hit a triple to cut their lead to one. The Spartans then ripped off an 11-4 run to push their advantage to nine with 3:23 left. Doyle single handedly kept the Lions from getting blown out as the guard drilled two deep threes and a pair of free throws in the final 2:57 of the half. York had to settle for a five point lead at the break.

The Spartans played well in the opening half, controlling the glass to the tune of 27-12, making up for their 10 first-half turnovers.

The Green and White hung on to their second half lead for about six minutes until the Lions took a 39-37 lead on a pair of Jared Diebler free throws. That started a stretch of basketball that was back and forth with four ties and five lead changes.

With the Spartans trailing by three, freshman Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) hit a triple from the wing to tie the game at 52 with 2:06 left. Rashon Anderson-Brown was fouled after collecting an offensive rebound and sank a pair of free throws to give the Lions their last lead of regulation with 1:12 left.

Mathews was then fouled and missed both free throws and then was called for a foul on the Lions' top free throw shooter William Doyle. Doyle entered the game shooting well north of 82% for the year. Doyle missed the front end of the bonus, allowing Mathews a chance to get the game to overtime. Doyle's three pointer with two seconds left missed the mark as the game headed to an extra session.

The Lions took a three point lead with 2:39 left in overtime but York got buckets from senior Matt McNeely (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Mathews on back-to-back possessions to take a one point lead.

Harrisburg's Kenny Stone was fouled with 1:01 left and sunk both free throws. The Lions got a defensive stop but Joey Farthing could not corral a pass with 18 seconds left and the ball went out of bounds, setting up the chance for Mathews to win the game.

Mathews led the Spartans with 19 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists in his 37 minutes of play. He was 9-for-20 from the floor and 1-for-3 from the stripe. Myers added 12 points and eight rebounds for York while freshman Brad Wesner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) added 11 big points off the bench. Senior B.J. Enck (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) gave the Spartans a huge boost off the bench with seven rebounds in his 21 minutes of play.

Doyle led the Lions with a game-high 22 points. However, the Spartans did an outstanding job on Doyle in the final 25 minutes of play as he scored just five points in the second half while he was shutout in overtime. Doyle was 6-for-14 from three including 5-for-12 from three. He was 5-for-8 from the stripe in the contest. Anderson-Brown added 10 points and nine rebounds while Deibler was the third Lion in double figures with 11 points and eight rebounds.

York finished the game shooting 39.7% from the floor while they canned 4-of-18 from three (22.2%). The Spartans were just good enough from the line as they converted 11-of-19 (57.9%) in the win.

Harrisburg struggled from the floor as they shot 31.1% from the field including 6-for-25 from three. The Lions converted 16-of-24 (66.7%) from the line.

York outrebounded Harrisburg 43-42 while the Green and White held a slight 16-15 margin in second chance points.

The Spartans continue their two-game road trip with a game at Christopher Newport in Newport News, VA on Saturday. Tip time from the Freeman Center is set for 4:00 pm.
