Wayne, NJ – Senior forward Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) posted game-highs of 27 points and 18 rebounds as Montclair State snapped a pair of four-game losing streaks with a 64-59 victory over William Paterson at the WPU Rec Center on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Kevin McGorry (Rutherford, NJ, Rutherford) chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds off the bench as the Red Hawks (7-11, 4-8 NJAC) snapped a four-game overall losing streak while also beating the local rival Pioneers for the first time since an 80-79 overtime win on January 4, 2012.
Goldson and McGorry each had nine points with senior guard Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune) netting eight as the Red Hawks shot 52 percent (14-of-27) in the first half and built an 11-point halftime advantage.
Trailing 11-8 with 14:42 to go in the first half, Montclair went on an 11-point run to take an eight-point lead. McGorry connected on a jumper and Goldson, who recorded his seventh double-double this season and 23rd career, threw down a dunk to put Montclair in front. McGorry his a jumper and then buried a three with 10:43 left before two free throws by Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL, Meadowbrook Academy) with 10:05 to go gave MSU a 19-11 advantage.
Singleton would add a basket to extend the lead to 23-14 with 7:25 remaining before William Paterson closed to within 25-23 with 4:25 left. Montclair State then closed out the half with the final nine points, six by Goldson for a 34-23 lead.
In the second half, the Pioneers (14-5, 8-4 NJAC) outscored Montclair 15-4 in the first six minutes tying the game at 38-38. But MSU refused to surrender the lead and went back up 51-47 on a Goldson layup with eight minutes to play. William Paterson would score the next five points to take the lead. The Pioneers would get a layup by Javae King-Gilchrist to a 56-55 lead with 4:05 left.
It would be the last lead the host team would get as Singleton answered with a layup to regain the lead for the Red Hawks and McGorry put back a miss with James D'Angelo (Long Valley, NJ, West Morris Central) adding a free throw for a 60-56 lead with 34 seconds to go. Singleton added another foul shot to push the lead to 61-56 with 16 seconds left however Zach Frick drained a three-pointer to pull the Pioneers within 61-59 with 11 ticks.
Gonzalez was fouled immediately and hit both foul shots to make the score 63-59. After a miss by the Pioneers, Singleton connected once from the foul line for the final margin.
Singleton finished with 12 points and added six rebounds for MSU with Gonzalez getting six along with three rebounds.
MSU returns to action on Saturday, February 1 as it travels to Camden, NJ to face Rutgers-Camden at 3:00 pm in an NJAC contest. The Red Hawks are then home on Monday, February 3 to battle Hunter College at 7:30 pm.
