Brooklyn Defeats Medgar Evers, 88-61

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team made the short three mile road trip up Bedford Avenue on Wednesday night, as the Bulldogs took home an 88-61 victory over borough and City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival, Medgar Evers College at the Cougars Cave.

With the win, BC improves to 6-12 overall on the season and 3-7 in the CUNYAC; while Medgar Evers drops to 2-18 overall on the year and 1-10 in conference play. The Bulldogs have also swept the season series against the Cougars, as BC defeated Medgar Evers, 89-68, back on December 13th at the West Quad Center.

Brooklyn never trailed in the game as the Bulldogs led from the opening tip until the final buzzer, shooting 40.3% (29-72) from the field, 36.8% (7-19) from the three and 79.3% (23-29) from the free throw line.  The tenacious BC defense also forced Medgar Evers into 25 turnovers, which led to 29 points for the visitors.

Sophomore Egzon Gjonbalaj led the way for Brooklyn scoring a game and career-high 27 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field, including going 2-for-6 from three, and 7-for-10 from the free throw line. Gjonbalaj also added eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals to his stat line. Junior Justin Staton recorded his first career double-double in a BC uniform with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Classmate Jai Kellman added 16 points coming off the bench, while freshman Anaselrahman Abdu netted a career-high 10 points also coming off the bench.

For Medgar Evers, Khalid Yousef poured in a team-high 17 points, while Pablo Segura chipped in with 14 points. Valin Williams finished the night with a double-double with 12 points and game-high 22 rebounds. Angel Gonzalez contributed with 11 rebounds as the Cougars out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 51-48.

Brooklyn will be back in action tomorrow, Thursday, January 30th, as the Bulldogs will play host to Yeshiva University in their final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm at the West Quad Center. BC Radio will be on hand to broadcast the game.
