Clutch Free Throws sink E&H as Hornets win Fifth Straight, 77-73

LYNCHBURG, VA – A pair of free throws by sophomore Alex Graves with 2.2 seconds left sealed the game as the Lynchburg College men's basketball team won its fifth-straight contest Wednesday, 77-73, over Emory & Henry College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The Hornets trailed 38-35 at the half before clawing back for a three-point lead with 11:32 remaining. Lynchburg went on a 10-0 run to take its largest advantage of the game, 64-51, with 7:41 left to play.

Four different Hornets scored during the run in what would be a balanced offensive attack for LC. Ten players scored for the Hornets, including 24 points coming from the bench.

The Wasps turned up the intensity as Kevin Anzenberger scored five points in under 30 seconds. Brett Pearman matched the task, posting five more points in a 12-second span to cut the gap to six, 67-61.

Zack Burnett put the Hornets up nine on the next LC possession, connecting on his first shot attempt of the game.

Emory & Henry went on a 12-4 run over the next four minutes to get the game within one point, 74-73, with 25 seconds to play. The Wasps fouled Burnett on the next LC possession and following a made free throw, E&H had the ball, down two with 20 seconds left.

Following a Wasp timeout, the in-bounder found Charles Smith under the basket. Daniel Rowe stepped in Smith's way, knocking the ball out of bounds with 5.3 seconds left. Malcolm Green received the next inbounds pass, but Rowe challenged the shot and forced a miss off the side of the rim to set up the Graves rebound and subsequent free throws.

Manny Hernandez led all scorers with 21 points and four assists. Lyndon White added 13 points and four helpers for the victors. Austen Arnold contributed nine points and six rebounds while Graves and Rowe finished with eight points each.

Green finished with 17 points for Emory & Henry (2-16/0-9) while Pearman finished with 12 points and five assists. Anzenberger and Tyler Mullins had 11 points each.

Lynchburg (14-4/7-2) welcomes Virginia Wesleyan College (13-4/6-2) to Turner Gymnasium for a big ODAC matchup Saturday at 3 p.m.
