Cold Shooting Drops Runnin Royals

More news about: Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, VA --- ODAC-leading Guilford proved their worth Saturday afternoon, holding off the EMU basketball men in Harrisonburg, 77-63.  GC took over a tight game with an 11-2 run early in the second half and the Royals could get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

Eastern Mennonite has a season-best three-game winning streak snapped, slipping to 9-8 and 4-4 in the ODAC.  The Quakers stand at 13-4 including 7-1 in the conference.

Guilford scored first in the game, but the Royals jumped ahead 9-4.  The visitors then took their own five-point lead, and had a 36-32 cushion at halftime.

Early in the second, a three pointer pulled EMU to within two points at 44-42.  The Quakers responded with seven unanswered points, and then another mini-spurt of four points to push the lead to 55-44 with 11:55 to go.

From that point on, neither team would have a run bigger than 5-0 until the final minutes.  The Royals were still within shooting distance when David Falk (Madison, Va./Madison) hit a layup to cut the deficit to 69-61 with 2:52 left.  But the men then missed three straight shots and the Quakers patiently scored eight in a row, including going 6-for-6 in free throws, to seal the final decision.

Eastern Mennonite played well, but the men were weighed down by not getting their outside shots to fall.  The Royals finished 4-for-25 from three point range, which sagged their shooting percentage to 38%.  Guilford shot 48% from the floor.

Falk finished with his 11th double double of the year, coming in with 17 points and 15 rebounds.  He also blocked three shots.  Marcel Crump (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) scored 14 points and handed out a team best four assists.

RJ Sims (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) put in nine points and Woody Furbush (Bridgeton, N.J./Salem) hustled his way to eight rebounds, including five offensive.

Matt McCarthy led Guilford with 20 points, including four of the team's five three pointers.  Zeb Richardson added 17 points.

The Royals go back on the road on Wednesday, playing at Shenandoah University in Winchester.
