Big Scoring Run Pays Dividends for Rutgers-Newark in 91-69 Win Over Montclair State

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore David Azoroh (Ewing, NJ / Ewing) scored a career-best 30 points while junior guard John Snow (Newark, NJ / Montclair Kimberly Academy) added 17 as Rutgers-Newark used a big scoring spurt bridging the first and second halves in a 91-69 win over Montclair State on Saturday.

Sophomore Jordan McDaniel (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) added 10 points off the bench as the Scarlet Raiders (13-5, 9-2 NJAC) swept the season set with the Red Hawks while upping its winning streak to seven games.

Senior guard Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune) finished with 21 points and five rebounds for Montclair State (6-11, 3-8 NJAC), which dropped its fourth consecutive game.

Azoroh surpassed his previous career high of 18 set last January against Rowan with a 19-point first half however the Scarlet Raiders found themselves down by seven with 2:17 to go after Montclair State scored eight straight points, including a three-pointer by Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL, Meadowbrook Academy) that made the score 35-28.

However  Rutgers-Newark countered with the final seven points as Chris Foreman (Union, NJ / Union) responded with a three following Gonzalez' trifecta and McDaniel had the final four as the teams headed to the locker room deadlocked at 35-35.

But the Scarlet Raiders opened the half with 20 of the first 24 points making the run 27-4 over  a nine-minute span. Azoroh had a three-point play to open the period and Rahim Bunch (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Egg Harbor Township) ignited a 13-0 run that ballooned the Scarlet Raider lead to 55-39 with 13:18 left. Christian Garcia (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) had five points in the spurt.
Foreman finished with nine points off the bench while Snow and Azoroh each grabbed five rebounds. Snow dished out five assists as Rutgers-Newark shot a solid 61 percent (36-of-59) in the game including 22-of-29 in the second half.

Gonzalez had 15 points for Montclair State, which got double-digit scoring efforts from Erick Loften-Harris (Union, NJ, Union) and Kevin McGorry (Rutherford, NJ, Rutherford) who finished with 13 and 10 points respectively. Chris Torres (Oakland, NJ, Indian Hills) collected six points and nine rebounds.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, January 29 as it travels to local rival William Paterson for a 6:00 pm matchup with the Pioneers.
