Edgewood College falls in final seconds to Dominican University

MADISON, Wis. – After suffering a narrow overtime defeat on Wednesday, the Edgewood College men's basketball team was eager to bounce back, but again found themselves in a nail biter. The Eagles battled through 11 ties and 15 lead changes, but ended up on the losing end after Dominican University hit a jumper with 1.7 seconds to send Edgewood College to a 59-57 defeat. 

At halftime, the Eagles (9-8, 7-5 NACC) held a 15-13 rebounding advantage, including 5-1 on the offensive boards, but trailed 33-30 after the Stars shot 54.2 percent from the floor. Brett Meinecke converted an and one while Joe Klocek hit a jumper which sent the game to its seventh tie at 35-35. Dominican's Taylor DeRoo hit a pair of free throws to make the score 46-45 in favor of the Stars and the two teams would trade leads back and forth until the final minute. Klocek tied the game at 55-55 with a jumper under a minute to play but Dominican's Josh Mayberry quickly put the Stars back ahead with a jumper in the paint at 47 seconds left. With the clock winding down, Justin Williams made a strong move inside to lay a bucket for the tie, leaving the Stars with a final shot for a chance to win. Dominican drew up a play and left the ball in the hands of DeRoo who dribbled to the right wing and hit a jumper in traffic leaving just 1.7 seconds on the clock and Edgewood College no time to respond.

The Eagles led much of the first half behind nine points from Klocek and turning six Dominican turnovers into eight points. The junior put Edgewood College up by four at 25-21 with 5:36 to play in the half before the Stars answered with a triple and a free throw. Tal Diekvoss hit the Eagles' only three-pointer of the half to pull Edgewood College ahead by one, but two free throws and a tip in at the halftime buzzer gave the Stars a 33-30 advantage into the locker room.

Klocek led the Eagles with 19 points while Dylan Rusch finished with 12 including 10 in the second half. Williams had eight points and seven rebounds while Emilio Lopezfinished with seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Diekvoss also chipped in five points and three assists without a turnover off the bench.

Edgewood College's schedule gets no easier as they prepare for MSOE on Tuesday. The Raiders, who are third in the conference, will host the Eagles who sit in fifth place. Tipoff from the Kern Center in Milwaukee will be at 7:00 p.m.
