HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College improved to 13-3 overall after their 107-85 Allegheny Mountain Collegaite Conference victory over D'Youville College (1-16) tonight. In a basketball game that started out as a track meet, the Hawks got in their shooting rhythm and sprinted to a 25-point lead scoring 59 points by the break. Both Hilbert and D'Youville pulled the quick trigger the second period with a combined 99 points scored. The Hawks improved to 8-2 in AMCC as D'Youville dropped to 1-9.
D'Youville's Marcus Clark led all scorers with 28 points while Trevor Stark led the Hawks with 21 points, 7 assists and 5 steals.
The Hawks Jordan Kurmro was perfect from the floor hitting all six attempts which 12 points were earned from beyond the 3-point line. Nick Nadeau chipped in 14 points and 4 assists. Jerame Owens added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals while CJ Hodge finished with 6 assists, 5 steals and 4 points.
Jon Gemerek finished with 18 points and Julian Reed matched game-high honors with 8 rebounds and added 11 points and 3 block shots.
Hilbert shots 52.4% from the field and 50% from the three point line (11-22). The Hawks won the rebounding battle by 5 boards and had 27 assists and 20 steals.
D'Youville shot 40.3% from the floor and between the two teams, the combined turnover number totaled 49.
Neither team looked to run an offensive pattern during the game's first 10 minutes. D'Youville's Conor Gallivan stole the ball and fed Jon Germerek for the game's first bucket. Hilbert went on an 8-0 run comprised of offensive rebound put-backs and one lay-up. Jordan Kumro hit back-to-back baskets and Jerame Owens' dunk capped a 9-0 run by 9:05. Hilbert took at 59-34 lead to the locker room by outscoring D'Youville 18-0 in fast break points and doubled them up in bench scoring (31-15).
Chris Davidson opened the second half with a short jumper which gave Hilbert their largest lead of the night – 61-34. The Hawks held a 20-point lead for a little over eight minutes until Marcus Clark, ranked 6th in the Div III in field goal attempts, hit consecutive threes cutting the score to 19. He kept things interesting scoring seven straight points off transition layups or pull-up deep 3-point shots. Insert Kumro who, again, hit two 3-pointers, this time only 30-seconds apart which helped stretch the Hawks lead. Jerame Owens turned aTrevor Stark steal into two points in the paint, before Nick Nadeau launched a long ball which hit nothing but bottom of the net. The Hawks' next trip down the floor ended with Jalen Smith hitting his second three pointer of the night. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way for the high scoring final.
Hilbert turns around and hosts Franciscan University this Saturday, January 25th with a 2pm tip-off.
