Dominant Second Half Carries William Paterson Men’s Basketball Past TCNJ, 83-56

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (14-3, 8-2 NJAC) scored 16 of the second half's first 18 points to blow past visiting The College of New Jersey (7-10, 5-5 NJAC), 83-56, in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's basketball action Jan. 22.

 

Trailing by three at halftime, 44-41, Pioneer junior guard Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) contributed eight points to an opening 16-2 run that pushed WP ahead by a 57-46 count at the 13:27 mark. A later 15-2 burst turned it into a 22-point game (73-51, 5:20) as the Pioneers outscored the Lions during the game's final 20 minutes, 42-12. After allowing TCNJ to shoot 54.2 (13-24) percent during the first half, William Paterson put the clamps on defensively following the intermission, as the Lions made just five of their final 22 attempts (.227) from the floor.

 

Burgos led all scorers with 23 points. Junior guard Jaques Conceicao (Massama-Lisboa, Portugal/Francais Charle Lepierre) contributed 17 tallies and a team-best eight rebounds, and senior guard Javae King-Gilchrist (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) chipped in 10 points, seven boards, nine assists and four steals.

 

The Pioneers controlled most of the early action, surging ahead by a 23-16 score with 12:14 remaining in the first half, but a 9-2 Lion burst handed TCNJ a 40-34 edge with 3:23 on the clock. Junior forward Alex Fox scored the final five points of the run, part of his 16-point effort that allowed the Lions to carry a 44-41 advantage into the locker room.

 

Fox finished with 20 points, sophomore forward Bobby Brackett had 13 tallies and 12 rebounds, and junior guard Jayson Johnson posted 11 points.
