Gibbons, Statesmen pull away from Bard with late push

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.The Hobart College basketball team held Bard College to 25 second-half points and pulled away late to earn a 71-59 victory in Liberty League play this afternoon. Senior Joe Gibbons scored 14 of his team-high 20 points in the second half as the Statesmen rallied from a 3-point halftime deficit.

Bard (5-7, 0-3 Liberty League) shot 54 percent from the field in the first half and led, 34-31, at the break. But the Statesmen tightened up defensively and made 19-of-22 free throws in the second half to put the Raptors away.

The eighth and final tie of the game came with 12:09 remaining at 41-41. Hobart outscored Bard 30-18 the rest of the way to improve to 10-4 overall, 4-1 in the Liberty League. Clinging to a 1-point lead, 50-49, got some breathing room thanks to a 16-6 run. Junior Connor Rehbaum registered five of his 18 points during the surge.

Senior Richie Bonney added 12 points and six rebounds for Hobart and junior Trey Blanding accounted for all 10 of his points from the free throw line with a perfect performance.

Bard got 20 points from senior Lamar Powell, 14 points and 10 rebounds from sophomore Brandon Cunningham , and 10 points from freshman Alex Fabean-Scotch.

The Statesmen next host Skidmore at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24.
