Rochester Rallies Past Case Reserve, 69-66

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore reserves Jared Seltzer and Dylan Peretz combined for 22 points and 15 rebounds to rally the University of Rochester to a 69-66 men's basketball victory over Case Western Reserve at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday night.

Seltzer scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds – six off the defensive boards. Peretz had eight points and eight rebounds. His most important play came in the last three seconds when he tipped away an inbounds pass by Connor Edel and caught it to ensure the win.

Nate Vernon added 14 points for Rochester (7-6 overall, 1-1 University Athletic Association). Sam Borst-Smith scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds, added four assists, and three steals.

David Thompson led four Case men in double figures. He had 16 points. Dane McLoughlin scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Julien Person scored 13, and Tim Chung had 11. Jimmy Holman had eight points and five assists. Case is 9-4 overall, 1-1 in the UAA.

The Yellowjackets trailed by as much as 14 in the first half  and were down by nine three times in the second half. The last time came with 10:35 left when Thompson tipped in a missed shot for a 61-52 Case lead. 

Vernon sank a 3-point goal, Peretz made a layup, and Seltzer hit a jumper. Rochester drew within 61-59, with 8:07 left. Person's 3-pointer put the Spartans ahead by five before Rochester went on a 6-0 run. The Yellowjackets took their first lead since early in the first half on a Peretz putback with 3:45 left (65-64).

Thompson's layup pushed Case back in front (66-65) with 2:13 to play, but he fouled out with 1:04 remaining and the Spartans still up by one. Seltzer made a one-and-one with 50 seconds left (67-66). Borst-Smith made two shots with 18 seconds to go (69-66). Kyle Reardon stole the ball for Rochester but missed the front end of a one-and-one with three seconds left. Case rebounded. After one timeout by each team, Edel tried a baseball pass which Peretz deflected, caught, and was able to dribble out the clock.

Heading into Sunday, Washington is first with a 2-0 record. Brandeis is 0-2. The other six UAA men's teams are all 1-1. Carnegie Mellon, which upended Emory, 95-83, comes to the Palestra on Sunday at 12 pm.
