NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team was unable to find an answer for SUNY Plattsburgh's strong shooting, as the Hawks fell, 95-81, to the Cardinals in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at the Hawk Center Friday night.

Plattsburgh, which had suffered a come-from-behind upset defeat at the Hawk Center last year, made a statement early, shooting 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from long range in the first half. The Cardinals switched to an interior-based approach in the second half and wound up shooting 55.4 percent (31-of-56) from the floor for the game.

New Paltz drops to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks, who are in search of their first home win of 2013-14, look to get back in the win column tomorrow afternoon against SUNY Potsdam at 4 p.m. Plattsburgh rises to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC. The Cardinals will look for the weekend sweep tomorrow afternoon, as they take on SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m. in Oneonta, N.Y.

The Hawks hung tough for the first minute and a half of the contest, going basket for basket with the Cardinals. After a made jumper by sophomore guard Keegan Donovan (Groton, N.Y./Groton) put New Paltz on top by one (6-5) with 18:29 to play in the first half, Plattsburgh went on a 17-0 run that was fueled by three treys. New Paltz whittled the deficit to single digits when a Donovan three-pointer drew the Hawks within nine at 31-22, and with just two minutes to go in the first half, it became a 43-35 game after an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore guard Zach Cone-Douglas (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz). Plattsburgh closed the half on a 4-0 spurt to enter the locker room with a 49-37 advantage.

New Paltz's high-water mark of the second stanza came in the form of a 6-0 run, and back-to-back three-pointers from graduate student guard Nick Taldi (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) and Donovan pulled the Hawks within eight (56-48) with 16:30 to play in regulation. New Paltz trimmed the deficit to eight twice more in the period, but the Hawks were never able to mount a significant run to stage a comeback.

New Paltz shot 40.3 percent (29-of-72) from the floor and went 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the line. Both teams had 12 turnovers, and Plattsburgh held a 38-35 margin on the boards. The Cardinals scored 16 second-chance points and 18 points off turnovers, while the Hawk bench outscored their counterparts' by a 22-21 margin.

Five Hawks reached double figures, led by senior guard Andrew Joseph's (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Art and Design) 14 points. Donovan and Taldi each had 13 points, while junior guard/forward Taylor Sowah (Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) and sophomore forward Kevin Roach (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) each notched 10. Roach's point total came in 26 minutes of reserve duty. Joseph once again turned in a balanced stat line of eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal. Roach grabbed a career-high nine rebounds to pace the Hawks on the boards and was one short of a double-double.

For Plattsburgh, senior guard John Perez and sophomore guard Edward Correa scored 28 and 25 points, respectively, while sophomore guard/forward Xavier Thomas netted 12 points coming off the bench. Senior guard Chris Manning and junior guard Shamoy McIntosh helped keep the offense running with six assists each, while senior forward Shavar Fields grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
