Oneonta Sinks 15 Treys in 78-70 OT Win at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Oneonta made 15 3-pointers, one shy of tying a school record, and the visiting Red Dragons defeated Cortland, 78-70 in overtime, in a SUNYAC men's basketball matchup.

Oneonta upped its record to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the league. Cortland, which had a 5-game winning streak snapped, is now 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the SUNYAC.

Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs) made 4-of-5 treys and led Oneonta with 19 points. He also recorded four assists and six rebounds. Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) finished with 17 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the arc and Jack Dignan (Brewster) connected on 4-of-6 from 3-point range and ended with 15 points, five assists and six rebounds.

Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) contributed 14 points and four assists. He made two 3-pointers. Larry Brink (Spencer/Spencer-Van Etten) led the squad with nine rebounds. As a team, Oneonta finished 15-of-31 (48 percent) from 3-point range compared to 9-of-24 (38 percent) from inside the arc.

Cortland was led by senior Kevin McMahon's (Hoosick Falls) 24 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. He made 8-of-16 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 6-of-8 free throws. Senior Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals and junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) added 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) dished out a team-high five assists and junior Matt McGowan (Lake George) pulled down six rebounds, four on the offensive glass. Cortland shot 35 percent overall and 31 percent (9-of-29) from the 3-point range.

Neither team led by more than six points in the second half. Cortland tied the game on a McMahon 3-pointer with 3:24 left in regulation, but Zuvic put Oneonta up 61-58 with a trey at the 3:06 mark. Hefele hit a layup with 2:45 remaining, but Lee sank two free throws with 2:38 remaining to keep Oneonta up by three.

Another Hefele layup pulled Cortland within one, and Spendjian made a 3-pointer with 1:10 left to put Cortland ahead 65-63. Lee's driving layup with 47 seconds left – just Oneonta's second 2-point basket of the half – tied the game at 65-65. Cortland turned the ball over with 19 seconds remaining, but Lee's deep 3-pointer missed the mark at the buzzer.

Oneonta used back-to-back 3-pointers by Dignan and McElroy in the first two minutes of overtime to take a 71-65 advantage, and the visitors led by at least five points the rest of the way.

Cortland will travel to Geneseo on Friday at 8 p.m. and will host Brockport Saturday at 6 p.m.
