Gwynedd Mercy Uses Big Second Half to Defeat Keystone

Gwynedd Valley, PA – Trailing by two points at halftime, Gwynedd Mercy University outscored Keystone College 59-40 in the second half on their way to a 92-75 victory over the Giants in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Monday evening.  The Griffins improve to 10-4 on the season and 6-1 in league play while the Giants fall to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the CSAC after suffering their fourth-straight game.   
 
Alex Smith (Floyd, NY/Holland Patent ) gave Keystone an early lead on Monday night by connecting on a three pointer before Gwynedd Mercy used a 7-0 run to build a 9-3 advantage just under four minutes into the contest.  Trailing 21-14 with 10:35 left in the first half, Keystone went on a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to one point at the 7:55 mark when Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) scored on a layup. 
 
Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) hit a pair of free throws at the 6:13 mark to make it a 23-22 game in favor of Gwynedd Mercy who then scored six-straight points to push their lead to 29-22.  With the Griffins holding a 31-26 with 2:37 left in the opening half, Ben Holl (Philadelphia, PA/Friends Select School) connected from downtown to start a 9-2 run to end the half that gave the Giants a 35-33 lead at the break.
 
Lunsford led all players with 12 points in the first 20 minutes of play while Holl added 11 points after going a perfect, 4-4 from the field in the half including three treys.  Keystone connected on 40.7 percent of their field goal attempts in the opening half including a 7-15 effort from downtown.
 
Arron Goodman paced Gwynedd Mercy's offense with eight points while Darnell Artis netted seven points in the first half.  The Griffins shot 41.4 percent from the floor in the first half while going 2-8 from beyond the arc.
 
The two teams traded buckets early in the second half and after Lunsford hit the front end of a pair of free throws to give Keystone a 38-37 edge, Gwynedd Mercy went on a 16-6 run that gave the hosts a 53-44 lead with 13:17 remaining in regulation.  Lunsford hit a pair of free throws to make it a seven point game at the 13:08 mark, but the Griffins used a 19-5 burst to open up a 72-51 advantage with 8:05 showing on the clock.   
 
An old-fashioned three-point play by Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) brought the Giants to back within 17 points with 5:58 to play, but Gwynedd Mercy was able to push their lead to as many as 24 points with four and a half minutes remaining.  Keystone would come no closer than the 17-point final differential in the closing minutes. 
 
Goodman and Julian Hyden tied for a team-high with 16 points apiece for Gwynedd Mercy.  Artis finished the evening with 14 points while Cedric Elleby netted 11 points and nine rebounds in the win.  Tom McKeefery also pulled down nine boards for the Griffins, who out-rebounded the Giants by a 41-33 margin.  The hosts finished the evening shooting 49.2 percent from the floor, 37.5 percent from three-point range, and 75.7 percent from the free throw line. 
 
Lunsford finished with a game-high 21 points for Keystone while leading the squad with seven rebounds.  Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) netted 14 points, Holl finished with 13 points, and Candemeres was the fourth Giants' player in double-figures with 11 points.  For the game, Keystone connected on 41.1 percent of their field goal attempts, 37 percent from beyond the arc, and 73.1 percent from the stripe.      
 
The Giants will look to snap their four-game losing skid on Wednesday evening when they host Cairn University in a CSAC contest scheduled to tipoff at 7:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
