NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team was involved in a dogfight with host City College on Saturday, but ultimately fell to the host Beavers, 69-65.
City (3-7, 2-4 CUNY Athletic Conference) led by seven points with 3:43 to play, when the visiting Lightning made one final push. Junior wingman Jonathan Greenfield (Hartford, Conn./Windsor) made a layup, then senior guard Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) banged a three-pointer, and suddenly the lead was down to just two points at 64-62, with 1:56 to play in regulation. After CCNY rattled home a three pointer, Gil knocked down his second straight trifecta, and the lead returned to just two points, with 1:11 to play.
City then ran the clock down, and eventually made a layup, extending the lead to four points, with 34 ticks remaining. Gil then attempted another three pointer, which was off the mark, and CCNY had the ball back with 13 seconds to go.
Lehman (8-6, 3-3 CUNYAC) was forced to foul to put CCNY on the line, shooting the single bonus. After a miss, sophomore Jerrome Jones (Bronx, N.Y./Mt. Vernon) grabbed the rebound with nine seconds remaining, with the deficit still four points. Jones would miss a shot as time expired, and the host Beavers held on the for 69-65 victory.
On the day, Gil scored a season-high 18 points, making four three-pointers on the afternoon. Greenfield finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, while senior Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) contributed 13 points. Sophomore guard Edwin Diaz (City Island, N.Y./Westside) narrowly missed a double-double, with nine points and as many rebounds.
Lehman has a few days respite before hosting Baruch on Wednesday, January 15, at 7:30 p.m.
